My ranger came with the 4 speed mazda tranny with the long bolts going from the back into the bell just like the spare diesel 5 speed I picked up later. I wanted an overdrive, and had a '90 mazda RX-7 5 speed in the shop that looked very similar. Sure enough, I was able to use the middle section with all the gears from the rx-7 along with the bellhousing from the 4 speed and a tail housing from a b2000 or some pickup like that. Works great!

I was told years ago that the front case and input shaft were differant on the gas. The rest was the same, even the gear ratios because Mazda made the differance up in the rear end ratios from gas to diesel. Although the gas with auto had the diesel rear end.
