This is from Al D. (the guy that bought the Dave who started this board truck) on the main drive shaft Bearing Replacement.
The bearing that fails is the large (1st) one on the main drive shaft from the clutch/engine (it takes all the torque /all the time )..it can be accessed by removing cover inside bell housing without splitting the tranny . . No I don't do much towing ..stay in 4th if I do . I have 15" rims/high profile tires in back...gives me almost same ratio as that gas rear end (my buddy did put a gas rear end in and drives in 4th most of the times ..likes it) ..we compared it to my tire overdrive...similar ..and he has had the same tranny /no pblms for 12-14 years. I have half a dozen trannys removed ..most of them rebuilt because of that bearing failure ...mind you if you keep driving it like that ,the other bearing will take some punishment
New Bearing is an SKF bearing 306NR ...has 11 rollers vs 8 ..was told it was best used in transmissions ...meanwhile it's the smoothest/most quiet tranny I,ve driven ..hope it lasts.
