What does it say about so called "free trade" when you have to go to Europe to get a Jeep with an engine designed, in part, by Detroit Diesel! www.allpar.com/mopar/Diesel.htmlEPA = Exxon Profit Assurance

I had a neighbor who had a fleet so everything they drove was diesel and they could use company fuel.
They had a diesel Jeep Cherokee. As I remember, it was late 80's when she had it and the thing was ragged out when she got it. It was after the Dasher gave up and while her E-150 was in disrepair but before she got the next E-150. (By the way, those vans are the first diesels I've ever seen with automatics.)
As far as they go, I am learning to not presume that any vehicle wasn't available in diesel form. I hear myself and others saying "I never knew they made a diesel one of those".

Back in the 80's Chysler was in bed with Mitsubishi so they put a Jap diesels in the Jeep. My brother bought one from a junk yard after it rolled. Only 10K on the motor but it ate all it's crankcase oil standing upside down, so all the berrings were toast and the crank had to be turned. Shortly there after the EPA wanted only trucks that were owned by the Teamster Union (1.5 ton)on the road. All others would have to meet there specs for NOx and soot with no thought given to COx or Sulphur. Go figure........... BTW: more carcinogens come from a car with a catalitic convertor than even the worst running diesel.

I had a Jeep CJ6 years ago with a Perkins engine in it. It was great. In the 80's the Cherokee came with a Renault engine and it was terrible. The jugs were separate from the block and new pistons were big bucks. The Mitsubishi engine was used in their trucks and the Dodge D-50,and also 1985-87 Rangers after Ford figured out the Mazda was too slow.John.
