Hey everyone. I just picked up an 83 diesel ranger, somehow someone got an 89 Mazda transmission into it. I’m trying to familiarize myself with the engine. I’ve owned a few sailboats and am no stranger to little diesels but I’m wondering what the deal is with the vacuum setup on the ranger? The pump is huge and seems to only be connected to the brake boost and some small sensor which I can only guess at this point is a low vacuum switch? Is that right? There is another hose that is for someone reason attached to the wiper fluid port near the windshield. I’m wondering if someone can tell me where that vacuum line is supposed to go.

Welcome to the forum. I have a Mazda and all the vacuum does is power brakes. Hopefully, someone with Ranger knowledge can chime in shortly. Good luck, Rob

Thanks Rob, yeah looks like Mazda is much different. An alternator with a vac pump? I just can’t believe the size of the pump on the ranger only powers the brake boost. It looks like I have a free port…maybe it needs to be plugged.

That line you are asking about should go to your hvac or heater controls.

when you need to replace the vacuum pump, the f-250 and 350 diesel of the early 80's use the same pump.
