Ok so I started with trying to change the O-rings of the injection pump. When I re assembled the pump I bent the main throttle lever and full load adj screw. The full load adj screw has now made custom threads in the top cap. Now I need to get the pump off.
My main question is when I go to install another pump I'm going to have to time it. I've done this on an old onan genset with #1 at TDC and the window in the pump with internal timing marks lined up.
I have a timing needle coming of the block to the main pulley but don't see or feel with any marks on it.
How do you find TDC and time this pump?
Also does any one have a lead on a place to purchase a pump at?
Thanks for any help. Richard

You have to use a dial indicator to time this pump. The original timing gauge for these engines had an offset adapter that the dial indicator mounted off center of the rear of the pump housing. It is hard to find the offset adapter but by removing the starter the dial indicator set for timing VW diesels can be used. There is a plug in the center back of the pump housing between the injector lines that has to be removed to install the dial indicator adapter. I thought somewhere on this site someone posted the procedure for it but when I did a search I couldn't find it.

Thanks for the response. I have read what you described on this forum before. But thought that was for the fine setting of the advanced trimming.
What I'm trying to get is the course setting. Making shore that port 1 is going to inject into cylinder 1 close to tdc of the power stroke.
You could have the pump 180 degrees out and have it injecting on the exhaust stroke.
Thanks. Richard

The timing gear stays in place and the pump shaft is keyed to the gear so the rough setting is easy but timing with the dial indicator is needed to make it run right.

Thanks.
I don't have the pump completely out yet. I didn't know there was a key. The only other pump I've done was just a tapered shaft no key so u had to time the motor.
When I tried looking up info on the pump nothing was really showing the key just the tapered shaft.
Thanks for the clarification.
Now onto finding another pump and or getting this one fixed.
Thanks again hoping to not have this truck down for too long.

I can confirm it will "run" 180 out but you'll know immediately as it won't rev it will just unleash huge black clouds while idling. I had a large internal fuel leak on my IP a few years ago and had it rebuilt by the same diesel pump shop that did my 7.3 IDI's on my truck. Haven't had any issues since.

Got another question. Does any one know what size jack bolt is for the pump timing gear?
I'm having a hard time getting the gear off so I can take it to a place to get rebuilt and repairs.
Thanks

found it.. injector timing injector timing.pdf (683.36 KB) just make sure you don't let the valve fall into the cylinder. if you have #1 piston 180 degrees off, you will have a bad day.. have fun...
