I just rebuilt my ip and got it all back together on the truck (83 ranger) and looks like I got the time good by sound. The truck won't idle it sputters. Drove it around the block fine but and it go to idle is does that. Wondering if anybody can help much appreciated

Diesel engines can not be timed by sound. You need a timing gauge to do it right. The one for these engines is an offset gadget that holds the dial indicator and is very hard to find now. The one that is made for VW and Dodge Cummins is very available and will work but it screws straight into the back of the pump and the starter has to be removed to use it.

Sounds like the pump is sucking air from the lines or connections. You may have to take off a couple of Banjo connectors and file the copper washers flat. Or look for a rusty line with pin holes.
