Well, don't expect too much out of the truck. People buy these trucks with the expectation that they are going to be (or modified to be) like a small Dodge powered Cummins. Not going to happen! Even if your name is "Banks", still not going to happen! These trucks are basically barely road worthy tractors! Have you driven the Ranger yet? The 2.2L puts out about half the HP of what the Dodge 2.2L puts out, but about the same TQ. Kind'a puzzling over why you would go thru all the work to transplant the engine from the Ranger to the Dakota? Seems like a lot of work for no real gain. The two trucks seem to be about the same size and weight, so......why? If you've read the posts here (highly recommended), you should have some idea of the engine and what it's capable of powering. If you plan on repowering the Dakota, why not repower with something that will give you better results? Then you can use the truck as a truck. I seriously love the Ranger diesel, have 3, but am a realist when it comes to their limitations and capabilities; slow speed, no real towing capability, lack of parts, ect. There might be some different 4 cylinder diesel engines that would be better suited for your repower project. Just a thought. Not to dissuade you from the transplant, cause it's your truck and transplants are pretty cool! Especially from gasser to diesel, but....you already have a rare, original, diesel Ranger! Which is much cooler in my opinion. Just be realistic about what you're trying to achieve here. If you do the swap, document it and let us know how it goes.

I'm sure the Mazda diesel would be flattered. YOu'd have a more comfortable truck in a Dakota. There are all sorts of things you could repower with the 2.2l. but automotively speaking, you'd be putting a put-put in a speed boat.

The first thing you'll want to do to that Dakota is a gear swap. Gear it low; I mean LOW. If you tell me what transmission will be behind the diesel and what tire size you'll be running I could make a recommendation on the ratio.

well I thank you all for the help the reason i'm doing it is because its what I got and the motor blew in the Dakota and the ranger was in extremely bad shape so yeah and as far as gears im running the 4speed out of the ranger and the dodge rear end. I started on it a few days ago and I got it bout back together and every thing seems to fit about perfect ill keep you updated and maybe get some pics

i hope the dodge has a 3.90 , 4.10 or 4.56 rear end in it. and you have parts available to build the 4 speed transmission..they don't last long with heavy loads placed on them. . as the dakota weighs more than the ranger. by several hundred lbs... the ranger came with 215:75x14 tires, the dakota has larger tires, requiring a more aggressive gear ratio... the perkins, does not have the power to do the work you want... you would be better to use a vw rabbit engine... at least they make about 90 hp.... best choice is to get a south american ranger, range rover and put the power stroke engine and bell housing in the truck with a gas powered trucks transmission...
