I seem to have a leaky throttle shaft seal and have been searching this forum trying to find some directions on how to replace this. The only links that I can find however no longer work. I was wondering if anyone had the directions to just change the seal without pulling the whole pump? Thank you in advance.

A few of posts back there was a link that is helpful. It was kind of hidden in that it just said link. You have to start at about step 85 to get to the cover area. It is about VW's but it applies to our pumps as well. gnarlodious.com/Vanagon/Bosch_Pump/-Rebuild Try your best to mark the spline on the lever and shaft before removal or you might have to experiment to get the idle right later. You can also do a google search for Bosch VE pump rebuild instructions and come up with a lot more info.

Thanks, I will take a look at that. I will mark the throttle plate as best as I can. I also read that the power steering pump has to be removed? Can anyone confirm this? Im gonna try this when I get home tonight.

Well I replaced the throttle shaft seal, yet now it's leaking from the cold start. Does anyone have info on changing this seal?

Since you survived the harder of the two the cold start seal should be a breeze for you. I don't have my engine nearby so I don't remember if it has 2 or 3 screws holding it to the pump body but all it takes is removing these screws to get it off and the seal replacement is easy from there.

Thats good to hear, the throttle shaft seal really tested my patience. Does the linkage and springs have to come off of the cold start to access the screws you are talking about? Are they indexed like the throttle was?

The screws are accessible and the cover comes off with the lever. It is a fairly simple job compared to the top cover.

I remember reading in one of the threads relating to the seal changes - they are on here, only the search tool leaves a bit to be desired - that the advance arm can be installed incorrectly on the shaft. To get the search to work, you need to include a time period in days in which to search, the keywords, and you have to remember to select the board (general discussion board). YOu can get it to work and there's a fair bit on the subject.. which is how I learned about the advance lever, here. north76.proboards.com/search/results?where_board_subboard=1&what_at_least_one=throttle+shaft&when_days=6000&who_only_made_by=0&display_as=1#page=2Also, do you think there's a chance there are restrictions in the return lines pressurizing the pump?

I had the same thought and I'm going to make sure those lines are clear. Thanks for the information
