Hi, my name is Salvy and I know a little bit about the Mazda diesel pickups back in the 80's. There is one in a junkyard about 15 minutes from my house, and my dad wants to get it. I would, but I am 18 and already have two vehicles. My two vehicles are a 1982 Chevy LUV diesel and 1982 Datsun Maxima diesel. The LUV has about 200,000 miles on it, while the Maxima has about 180,000. Reply back if you want to ask any questions.

Why is it that the diesel craze was back in the 80's? In eroupe every brand has a diesel.
I test drove a new Ford Escort Diesel back in the 80's, now all that we can get is a big block pickup.
I also test drove a datsun king cab w/automatic. Never bought one.
Where is the salvage yard located? We have a "u-pull-it" place but I haven't seen any diesel's around here.

They had a automatic available for the Datsun diesel pickups? From my knowledge, I thought they only had 5-speeds. When you test drove it, did it have the SD22 or SD25 engine in it? Wow, I wish I could have test drove one when they were brand new. It would have been a dream.

wow.. it almost makes you wish we could go back into time and start hoarding these things in the back yard what i reffer to as (slush-o-matics) i think they did come in automatics, but they where rare. kinda like what they called the Gm (Irack-taxis) they made 3 speed standard stick shifts, made by gm many years ago, that iraq had orders but, in the end they decided they didn't want them.. so the public in canada/states? ended up getting them eventually. I wonder what they where like, in a stick shift 3 speed standard with a 305 eight under the hood.. *btw, my cookie setting in my browser must be turned off*

Dave, where do you live? I saw your original web page where you show your Mazda diesel pickup and when I clicked on the instrument panel pic I noticed that MPH is the secondary speed on the speedometer. Instead kilometers is used, I thought that was unusual and I am guessing you lived in Canada. But just to make sure I wanted to ask you where you do live? Because your Mazda looks exactly like the 82-84 Mazda B2200 diesel pickups that were available in the U.S. I appreciate your reply and thanks.

hi, sorry for the delay, yes im in canada, Ontario. the vehical originaly was sold in canada. its had alot of passed owners. good observation. the miles on the truck since the last photo have really increased, iv driven the truck so much lately, that i actually missed-calculated the level of fuel and ran out... ooops... $10 in a jerry can, bleeding the line leaves you with about $8 *chuckle* im serious thinking of switching over and making my own bio-diesel, thus keeping the tank nearly full at all times. Yes. Get it. Sounds like you have the workings for a pretty sweet fleet.
If nothing more, sell us some parts of that thing.

naa i would never sell the engine/tranny setup. even if the timing slipped, id get it rebuilt. (maybe rusty old body parts when the time comes...) Out of all the late 70s and early 80's vehicals iv seen, i never seen an engine thats so easy to work on. Another fav. i liked was working on the toyota 4a engine. gas carberaterd 4-Cly. i belive it was also a 2.2 they used alot of them in toyota station wagons, rear wheel drive, (yes leaf springs too) funny the 4x4 models had a smaller engine, weird.. 5 speeds and automatics. They used the same engine in a 1987 chevy novas too (kinda made the nova look bad) compared to the 70's muscle car. But dont get me wrong, the 4a engine was just as reliable as the mazda diesel today. the engine could really be driven hard, infact i used a toyota 4a engine to hual a 18 foot sailboat on a trailer home and back to the lake many times. (lots of gear shifting) It was 20 years old when i finally dumped it. ;D it was just a beater i paid $200 for. i got over 56,000 km out of the engine before i laid it to rest. My mazda diesel now is 21, im more lets say easy with it. I like to think it will last for-ever (engine wise)
