Wheels:
14", same 6-lug pattern as GM, Mitsubishi, Nissan, Toyota, and other trucks.
Gearing is low:
5-speed where 4th is 1:1 and 5th is a 0.875 overdrive. The rear end is 3.90:1.
I shift into 2nd at 10 mph, into 3rd at 20 mph, into 4th at 30 mph, and into 5th at 40 mph. This is fun: you feel like a li'l big rigger. I put a 2.25" turbo muffler on mine and I make sure traffic hears me shift 3 times just to go 35 in town. So as you can imagine, 5th gear is happy at 50-55 mph and thus the interstate is real work. I did an indicated 82 in a top end run on a high speed interstate (still getting passed). I have pondered switching out the rear wheels for 15"ones just for a long interstate trip to impove final drive ratio. Surprisingly, MPG aren't hurt too much from the high-revving trips.
Engine
The sticker on the firewall says it is rated at 58 HP.
The bore×stroke is 88.9×89.0 (mm). The compression ratio is a definitely non-turbo 22:1 yielding a cylinder pressure of 427 psi.
The engine oil pump discharges into the filter and into a thermostatic valve then into the engine. If the valve is hot enough, it routes oil through the oil cooler. The front apron has a scoop routing air across the cooler and there's a spoiler under the fan sucking hot air underneath.
An oil change takes a lot of oil (5-6 quarts). It varies depending on which filters you change. And there's probably a pint or a quart in the oil cooler and lines. There is no provision to drain these.
On the back of the alternator there's another pump. It is the vacuum pump and the recirc oil pump. The recirc oil is pulled out of the sump, sent throught filter, and returned to the sump. They seemed to design it for durability.
Valves are actuated by mechanical rockers but the adjustment periodicity is a decent 15000 miles.
Brakes have standard vacuum power assist like a gasoline truck would have.
The fuel system is well thought out with a water separator and a filter. The filter fitting incorporates a hand pump to facilitate bleeding. Injection pump is DIESEL KIKI CO. type VE.
The short bed fuel tank is 14.8 gallons and the long bed holds 17.4 gallons. The lowest I've dared run it let me add less than 15 gallons at fill up.
Short bed is 75" long (inside box length) and wheelbase is 107".
Long bed is 86" inside length and the wheelbase is 113". Bed width holds a double (full) size mattress.
