My temp gauge does not rise at full running speed on highway. It bumps up a little but not much. I think my temp sensor needs replacement. The thermostat is only a couple years old, should be good. Question: I have never touched the temperature SWITCH, which I assume goes to the warning light on dash. Should I replace that out of hand as it's ancient.

I have some questions. Has your gauge always stayed in that zone, or did it suddenly change? Was the change after you changed the thermostat? My gauge runs at about 1/3 at the most. Rob

The stat and sensor were changed about 4 years ago. It's been in the correct range since, with gauge running about 1/3 up. The gauge suddenly is not going up much at all, which could be a stuck stat or a bad sensor.

Most modern thermostats are designed to fail that way. Here's how you can check it... If possible, empty about a quart of coolant from your radiator. This will prevent hot coolant from overflowing from the radiator fill port.Save it in a clean can or bucket. With the engine nice and cold, remove the radiator cap, then start the engine. You can look into the radiator and you'll know when the thermostat opens. If you can reach into the top of a cold radiator with your finger you can tell when the thermostat opens. It won't burn you but look out, it's about to start moving coolant around. If you only feel the water start warming slowly and you don't notice a sudden increase of coolant turbulence and temperature, you most likely have a bad thermostat. Pour the used coolant back in and top off the coolant system until repairs can be made. Rob

Turned out to be the sensor, the wire connector was a bit corroded. Cleaned it up and added dielectric paste, works fine.
