I noticed a few months ago my fuel gauge was reading less than what's actually in the tank, over time it's reading less and less. Currently it's only reading half a tank when I have a full tank. Is this indicative of a leaky float that's slowly sinking over time? or maybe an electrical issue with a bad ground connection, or too much resistance in the wire?

A leaking float is out of the question. If it is partly full and still floating it will show very close to the actual level and then it will get enough in it to no longer float and will just sink to the bottom and show empty. Any of the electrical issues are possible but I would suspect the most likely one is the float resistor board itself. Older vehicles had a wire-wound float resister but they now have a printed carbon resister and over time the contacts wear off the circuit board.

When my fuel gauge quit working I pulled the sending unit out and cleaned off the contacts the brush rides against. I also very carefully and slightly bent the brush/wire piece inwards to make better contact with the board. Mine has worked fine since and that was about 4 years ago.
