I'm trying to determine why I've had a noticeable loss of power. I tried some fuel conditioner and some different fuel without improvement. Checked if it was sucking air since I had just dropped the tank. But I've put a clear line from the fuel heater to the filter and don't see much air. Also installed a vacuum gauge between the IP and filter with no noticeable restriction. I haven't put a clear line on the return yet to see if air might be entering after the filter or in the pump. I suppose it could still starve for fuel due to a restriction like a kink in supply hoses.
Could a restricted return line cause power loss? What are some common causes of sudden power loss? I'm tempted to see it as related to the fuel system since it coincided with the tank removal. But who knows what else unrelated can develop suddenly. A sudden shift in my perception seems unlikely. Doesn't seem to be bad fuel though I have no water fuel separator. Could water have damaged injectors or pump? Could I have lost a seal in the pump? Can I tell from temp. gun reading if one cylinder is bad? I find myself pumping on the accelerator thinking it will help. I don't see any vacuum increase under load. Does someone want to venture any guesses or offer some directions of inquiry?

I see a lot of bubbles on the return side. Another thing I discovered was that I had failed to properly vent the tank and pressure build up was evident by the whistling release of air through a pinhole. What was also interesting was that the pressure from blowing would be held - that is it would not release when I let off from blowing in it. I hacked out the spring seal in the gas cap. which improved the resistence blowing thru the return line and the ballooning tank. But it didn't improve power. Might I have done damage to the IP by running it this way? I don't think I have air leaks in the pump itself since I tested with a vacuum gauge (that is with the engine off).

After dropping the tank again I looked closely at the pick up and tested it. There is a round rig on the pickup tube below which is rubber hose extending down a couple inches further in the tank. The round thing has little rubber valve held on a spring. Is this a rollover valve? I wasn't impressed with the way it was sealing after cleaning out a bunch of crap in it with a scribe and blew it out with air. It did seem to seal. Anybody know what this is supposed to look like? thanks.
