I found a 83 Ranger diesel in my local salvage yard, the body is toast and the engine is basically stripped, other than the head, which is laying atop the block unbolted. Visually the head looks "ok" but that doesn't mean there aren't any cracks I can't see. I was thinking of buying it just to have a spare, or for possible resell, but I would be buying it "as is" and the yard boss wants $100 for it. I know $100 is a great price if the head was known to be good, but since the condition is unknown is it worth a $100 gamble?

Absolutely. I paid $400 for my replacement head. I'd risk $100 any day.

If you have the head I would be interested in buying it if it's in good condition. If you don't have it, can you tell me where the salvage yard is? I've been looking for a new head for mine for months...
