i am new to the diesel conversion. i truely enjoyed my old ranger and always wanted a diesel ranger. now i am comitted to the idea. i came across this web site that has :1983 FORD RANGER - Engine Assembly 2.2L VIN P, 8th Digit, Diesel, 4-134, 5-Years Warranty
how difficult would it be to fit in a 200 and above ranger?
what would it entail?
i am not looking for a race car or to pull a mountain. i just want a good reliable truck that will get good gas mileage and be able to tow about 2000 lbs not including trailer ( one of those home depot5 x 10 trailers).
It doesn't have to be a super highway speed demon but i don't want to be left standing still either.
i have looked at the vw tdi conversion and it does look rather involved but the results do look favorable.
i am hoping the above engine will be much less work.
any and all advise welcome.

you have several better engine choices to put into a newer ranger... 56 hp would not be safe with a newer ranger due to the additional weight of those vehicles. the mazda/perkins engine will not bolt up to most transmissions. those that it will bolt up to, are getting very hard to find and to find parts for... also they won't hold up to the towing requirements you posted... a 4bt cummins from a delivery vehicle. (is a very good choice), a 2.5 liter powerstroke from a south american ranger/range rover, engines can be imported... they will mount to a gas engine transmission. also some current engines such as a vw turbo diesel. also i've seen a jeep diesel conversion site, (can't remember the name of the company) that installed 4 cyl diesels that may be able to suggest the size and type of engine to use...
whatever you decide, it will be a major project..... don't forget to install stiffer springs and a larger anti-sway bar in the front end. as a diesel engine weighs a lot more than a gas engine...

I did the same thing a year ago. I put an 84 2.2 perkins in my 89 ext cab. I love the truck because I built it but.... It's terribly slow. Parts are hard to find( I just had to rebuild my water pump as they are no longer available).
I'm currently looking into a vw tdi swap. IMO best option out there. Apparently you can make a reliable 200 hp 300. Ft lbs with good mpgs

The 2.2's a great lil diesel but I wouldn't consider it a viable transplant for a modern Ranger, it's under powered, non-turbo, etc., I just don't think you'd be happy with the results. I just look at the 2.2's in the 83/84 Rangers as more of a "novelty", I love mine and just accept its limitations for what they are, but I wouldn't swap one into a newer Ranger.
