So I have my project (84 ranger 2.2 driveline in an 89 ranger extended cab) on the road. I am getting black smoke under acceleration. Is this normal? I think my milage may be low as well. Really too soon to tell. Any thoughts?

if mine doesn't smoke i would think something was wong...your pulling more weight now so its harder on the engine to get up to speed.... when i pull a trailer anytime i accelerate it smokes more than normal cause the extra load... you might try keeping lucas in the tank... i put some in each fill up and it keeps the smoke down unless i really get on it... which is not often

Another thought:
I'm using the gas muffler. It was an 89 2.9l v6. Same diameter exh pipe. Do you think the gas muffler could hurt my milage? Should I go open pipe?

i went open pipe for about 2 days...way too loud...ended up putting a glass pack back on it but its turned down before the rear axle.... not as much pipe but is a lot quieter

Hi Woody, I wonder if when you have a moment you could share some of the challenges you ran into with the drivetrain swap. The '89 model year included some changes including the facelift, interior mods and I read somewhere some frame improvements (was there also front suspension upgrades), correct? Did the old motor mount brackets install fine? Was the firewall an issue? did the tranny support bracket install fine? I was pleased to hear you could use an unmodified driveshaft. It's got me interested in such an undertaking myself. Please do send along some of pictures if you've taken some during the process and of the work in progress. They'd be much appreciated, and enjoyed by all no doubt. Best to you.

Getting revved up for my swap project. I blew the debris out of the lightly used example finally getting it to run on diesel. I seemed to be having intermittent trouble getting the fuel to the injectors. I wonder if this might be a vane issues in the ip. I had pulled fuel through the feed with a vaccum pump on the return line to get it running on diesel. here's a bad video: www.youtube.com/watch?v=R1Sm4hjJa3k
