I'm not having much luck with this truck, I replaced the cables hooked it all back up (it's about 93 degrees F outside today), and it just turns over and never catches. I know I probably still need glow plugs to start it? Is there some poor mans way of getting this beast started without glow plugs? I read - I believe it was here - that starter fluid isn't a good idea to use. And another tip was to point a hair dryer into the air filter area to heat up the air? There must be some way of getting this truck running until I can get this glow plug situation under control.

are you getting fuel to the injectors? break loose the fuel ine to the injectors on at least two of them. use the two wrench methode to keep the injector from turning. crank the engine and see if fuel squirts from the loosened fittings. if not, use the priming pump to make sure air is out of the fuel line to the injection pump. by bleeding the filter, then the fuel inlet line to the fuel pump/injection pump. then retry bleeding the injectors. if all of the air is out. then tighten the fittings and retry starting the engine.

I got it started with some starter fluid, let it run for about 10 mins. After i turned it off to see if it would start again. Its a very violent start the whole truck shakes like it's in a japan earthquake or something, even the shifter violently shakes back and forth. I also noticed fuel leaking from I think the throttle area. What would cause the truck to shake so violently like that?

you have air in the injector lines, and a cold engine. you need to use the injection advance cable, (the choke cable). and the throttle shaft seal is probably leaking. a earlier post covers the procedure to replace it. cc

oh, I see. Thanks for that as you can probably tell I'm new to diesel engines lol

I took this beast down to the mechanic here, to have them look at the fuel leak coming from the fuel injector pump thingy and they told me that basically it wasn't worth it to have it rebuilt. I trust them to some extent but, does anyone else have an opinion about this? Is it really not worth it, can it be rebuilt by myself? I'd hate to have to junk the truck.

Here's a thread regarding the pump leak. north76.proboards.com/index.cgi?action=display&board=general&thread=314&page=1You asked earlier: "Is there some poor mans way of getting this beast started without glow plugs?" You'll need glow plugs. Starting fluid is no good for your engine. GM 6.2 or 6.5 diesel glow plugs (82-98)will work if you run a 10 mm die on the threads of the glow plug and put spade connectors on your glow plug wires. I bought a Ranger with this set up several years ago and it worked well. Makes it a lot easier to find quality glow plugs cheap. An ACDelco 60G self limiting glow plug is only about 10 bucks and available everywhere.

Different sound. That one is the relay next to the wiper motor turning off the intake manifold heater. It only works if the motor is below 80 degrees F. Wow...this is important information. No where on the wiring diagram does it show an intake manifold heater. Is that what #2 glow plug relay does? If that is the case, it also keeps the glow plugs warm at the same time, with a reduce temp. JL

my low voltage relay clunks every time i use the clutch, until the engine is up to temp. i believe the controller gives extra glow time for when stopped or shifting until the engine temp switch opens. i found the manifold heater, boy is the wiring to it buried on my truck. i thought that the heater was just a spacer.

the intake heater has shorted out on both my trucks. i just dissconnected it. I cant tell any diffrence while starting in any weather, as long as my glow plugs are working well.
