This may be a dumb question but the 2.2 is the first and only diesel I've ever owned. What is it that actually generates the 'noise' coming from a diesel engine? and more specifically to our 2.2's how should they sound when properly tuned? should you be able to hear the 'clack clack' of the valves? or is that an indication the valves need adjusted? I've watched videos on youtube of 2.2's running and some appear to be more 'noisy' than others, not exhaust wise but more so engine wise.

Is it a knock or a click? Diesel knock is normal at idle. Clicking or tapping means your valve lash needs adjusting. The knocking will quieten down as you throttle up the RPM. Clicking will continue above idle. HTH. Rob

That's the beautiful melody of compression ignition. Ditto! 22:1 compression ratio, nearly three times that of a typical gasser.
